Easily remove United States of America from Outlook Contacts

Hello world, another find…. Yesterday I had a client, ask me how to remove United States of America from his outlook contacts.  It appears the iPhone or blackberry had added United States of America when he entered a new contact on the phone.

Here’s a solution I found on another web site:

While in Outlook’s contact list, change the view to “By Location”
(View->Current View->By Location). Now select one or more of the contacts
with USA in the “Country/Region” field and drag them to a contact with a
blank “Country/Region” field. The “Country/Region” will be changed to blank,
but the rest of the information will not be altered.

You have to use the “By Location” view – sorting them by the country field
in a different view won’t work the same way!

Works like a champ at removing this field from all the contacts, cleared around 1000 in less than 30 seconds….

Good Luck, Tom

Quickbooks not allowing create PDF and send to email

Ran into this problem this week with my friend over at CMA Services. The problem was Quickbooks 2010 no longer would create a PDF and email it.

It took me a little while to find the answer, and while I will list the three answers I found.  The last and simplest one, is what corrected the issue for me.

#1 – Unistall and Re-Install Quickbooks 2010. This is the top suggestion listed everywhere is really just a catch all, to solving all computer problems.  It really annoys me, when tech support jumps to this answer, because it really isn’t an answer at all, and 50% of the time it doesn’t fix anything.  In the case of Quickbooks, it can waste an hour of your time. I didn’t actually try this suggestion.

#2 – Close Quickbooks. Go to your Printer and Faxes in your Control Panel for Windows. Find the Quickbooks PDF Creator and delete it. When you reopen QB, the printer will populate. In my case when the printer repopulated it was created with a file in the queue – Intuit_QBOB_Internal.pdf – error printing. This file had a creation date of two days prior so I am assuming it was the culprit, but even after finally getting it to delete, as soon as I tried to send a new one it happened again.

#3 – Go to your Printer and Faxes in your Control Panel for Windows. Find the Quickbooks PDF Creator and open the printer properties. Under the ports tab, see if you have a port named NUL:, if so select it. If not, choose to add a local printer, select the option to create a new port. Select Local Port for the type of port and click next. Enter NUL: for the port name. Be sure to include the colon. Click OK. In my case the NUL: port was being used by send to One Note, but I just moved that to lpt2. Go back into QB and try sending a invoice out.

Hallelujah, problem was solved… Hope you find this faster than it took me to find the answer. Good luck out there.

Itunes resource hog | AppleMobileDeviceService.exe high cpu utilization

high cpu usage applemobiledeviceservice.exeAfter the recent iTunes update (10.5) a client called becuase of their computer seemed extremely slow.

When I arrived on site, I noticed

AppleMobileDeviceService.exe was using 50% of the CPU and iTunes the other 50%

I’m suprised he was able to get anything done with it open.

A bit of Googling suggested it’s a common problem and previously a reinstall of iTunes 10.5 was the suggested fix –I unistalled, and restalled version 10.5. to no avail. I also unistalled and installed an earlier version I had saved on the computer, also to no avail. I went as far as to unistall, delete all internal itunes folders, and still the same problem.

An hour and half later I found this -

netsh winsock reset

from a command prompt (as Administrator) followed by a reboot.

I have used this command in the past to fix internet connection issues, the funny thing is, only iTunes was having a problem, interent worked fine when iTunes was closed.

Apparently iTunes relies on something in the Windows TCP/IP stack, and it can get corrupted. The command will reset the Winsock Catalog to its default state – i.e. one that works properly.

It certainly fixed my iTunes this problem, hopefully Apple and Microsoft can learn to play nicer in the future, or maybe just another reason for windows users to buy a DROID….

Turn off IE preview in Windows 7

If you are using Internet Explorer and Windows 7, you may have noticed that when you mouse over an IE browser window, a preview of the open tabs in the browser is shown. While this is u seful to give you an idea of the sites you have open, it can get annoying if you have multiple tabs open at the same time. If you would prefer to disable this feature, you can.

Just go to Tools > Internet Options (in the upper right-hand corner of the browser) and then click on the “Settings” button in the window that pops up. In the list of Tabbed Browsing Settings, uncheck “Show previews for individual tabs in the taskbar.” Click on OK and you should be good to go.
